Have you ever picked up your sax and started practicing and noticed that you are having feelings of frustration, disappointment or self doubt?

I know that I certainly have. I've been playing the sax for over 25 years now and, especially in the early years, I had feelings that made me want to throw the sax across the room.

Of course I would never actually do such a thing, and I can assure you that no saxophones were hurt or injured in my personal journey with this beautiful instrument so far!

But how do we manage those negative feelings? And what kind of mindset works best in order to make realistic and achievable improvements on the saxophone for beginners?

In this blog post I would like to share with you techniques that have worked for me and that have had great success for other people that I have had the pleasure and honour to teach.

saxophone-for-beginners-expectations -habits.jpgLots of people have asked me over the years if teaching beginner saxophone players drives me crazy.

The short and sweet answer to that question is, "No, I absolutely love it!"

There's really nothing more gratifying than taking someone from zero knowledge of the sax to a place where they're able to play their first notes and tunes, and to witness them getting such pleasure out of that process. Truly, nothing else beats it.

8 key questions for your corporate event entertainment

[fa icon="calendar'] Friday,01 December 2017 10:0 / by Andrea Blades posted in corporate, live music

corporate-event-entertainment-8-questions.jpgSo you're looking to book some corporate event entertainment and have narrowed down your options to two or three great acts?

Before you make your final decision and sign on the dotted line, here's a checklist of 8 questions that you may want to put to your potential musicians to ensure they're the perfect fit for your event.

1) What other musical services do you offer?

It can often make financial and logistical sense to ask your corporate event musicians to take of other musical elements of your day event. If you're booking them to play for your champagne reception or cocktail hour then it may be worth asking them to quote for playing for your or sit-down meal or post-dinner turn-around time as well.

And if they're performing as a full band for your evening, perhaps they can offer additional smaller line-ups to take care of some of the other musical aspects of your event? You're highly likely to save money by asking the same musicians to cover a few different elements. And you'll also save yourself time by dealing with just one musical contact rather than several different ones.

corporate-event-entertainment.jpgStaging a corporate event, whether it's a party for your own staff or something for your clients, is all about creating the right atmosphere.

Perhaps you're looking to plan something more intimate or informal? Or maybe you're organising a larger event for hundreds of guests and are looking to deliver the wow factor?

Whatever your plans, live music can play a key role in helping to enhancing the mood of your event. But how do you decide what style of music is best? And how can you possibly aim to please a  potentially wide demographic (not to mention your own management team) who may have very different musical preferences?

In this blog post we explore some key questions to consider as you put together your plans for your corporate event entertainment.

How much should I expect to pay for my corporate event entertainment

corporate-event-entertainment.jpgLive music can add an exciting element to a corporate event, whether by creating a stylish background atmosphere for a drinks reception, or as the focal point for an evening party.

But with so many musicians and bands to choose from, and a surprisingly vast array of pricing structures, how can you be sure you choose the right band at the right price?

There are a myriad of factors that determine the fee that a band will charge you for their services and if you've done any research already you'll know that there can be a huge difference in price for corporate event entertainment.

Alongside all the practical aspects, such as size of band, travel and equipment, there are also the "intangibles" - those unseen things that can be just as important in contributing to the quality of the band's performance (both on and off-stage) and to your ultimate happiness as a client:

So let's run through a few of the main factors that are likely to influence your band's pricing - some may seem obvious, but there may be others that you've not considered:

9 questions to ask before you book your wedding musicians

wedding-musicians-entertainment.pngSo you've found the perfect band for your wedding and are about to seal the deal?

Before you sign on the dotted line, here's a checklist of questions that you may want to ask to ensure you've covered all your bases.

1) Can you add new song requests?

Every band has a set-list, but within that there should be scope to add your own special requests too.And after all, they'll want to play the music that they know you and your guests will love.

How easily your band can accommodate your new song requests will depend on how much notice you give them (which we'll cover in more detail below), the technical challenge of the songs and how the style or genre of the songs fits with their current lineup. If you've booked a trio or quartet for example but you're after a Glenn Miller Big Band sound-alike rendition of a favourite song, then that may be a step too far!But if you're looking for your band to put their own spin on a song then that's likely to be a lot more doable.

How to create a uniquely perfect wedding playlist for your ceremony

[fa icon="calendar'] Friday,10 November 2017 9:12 / by Andrea Blades posted in ceremony music, playlist

wedding-playlist.jpgWhen we think about what makes any experience truly memorable, it's often strongly connected to the physical sensations that we associate with that memory. Whether it's the flip-flops you felt in your stomach on your first date, the oaky smell of a log fire in a country pub or the thrill of hearing your favourite band live in concert for the first time.

And when it comes to the atmosphere that you may want to evoke for your wedding ceremony, the music that you choosecan play a truly special role.

Sure, as passionate musicians ourselves, we're unashamedly biased when it comes to singing the praises (quite literally!) of music as part of your wedding ceremony. But it's because we've seen so often, and in so many fantastic and original ways, the amazing impact that music can have.

The right song has the power to take the edge off that slightly nervous anticipatory atmosphere as your guests await your arrival. It can add to the sense of excitement as your entrance is announced and you take your first steps down the aisle. And it can perfectly capture that celebratory thrill at the end of your ceremony as you leave together as a married couple.

Music can help to tell your story, it can heighten the mood in amazing ways and it can provide a unique and unforgettable soundtrack to your wedding ceremony.
