Whether you're opting for live music for your wedding reception or a recorded playlist, there will come a point in your planning when you will want to start thinking about the choice of songs you'd like to include.

If you are booking a live musician or band for your reception then you may prefer to leave the majority of the musical choices to their discretion, perhaps just asking them to include a few of your favourite songs.

If you are putting together your own playlist from scratch, then here are a few things you might want to bear in mind.

Opt for broad appeal when choosing wedding songs

While it's important to put together a playlist of wedding reception songs that's personal to you, you may also like to tailor your choices to appeal to your guests (their age range and musical tastes) and to complement the overall mood of your day.

Low and slow

A playlist for a wedding meal will most likely be played in the background and at a lower volume.  So you might also prefer to choose songs that are a little less bassy and perhaps a bit slower in tempo.  That way the music can float over the room, enhancing the atmosphere but still enabling you and your guests to comfortably chat.

Pace yourself

While it's tempting to include all your favourite songs during the daytime reception, you might prefer to save your favourite tracks for your evening party when you'll have the chance to really appreciate them.  That way,  you can pace the energy of your day - so keeping it a little more cool and classic during the day and then crescendoing to full-on party time for the evening!
